Origin
It evolved in dry conifer forests, where ordinary quills snagged on resin and debris. Dense overlapping scales proved better both for defense and for keeping warm.
Appearance
An egg-shaped, cone-like body with eight large fixed scales, a small pale snout and four thick legs.
