Fernfawn

Natural basis: small deer + ferns

Types
Growth
Role
GuardianScout

Changes the shade of its antlers with the seasons and sheds them every year; the fallen tissue decays quickly and fertilizes the ground where the herd grazes.

Origin

It appeared in ancient humid forests. Its antlers became less a weapon than an organ for heat exchange and visual communication.

Appearance

A brown-and-green deer with a large head, four short thick legs, a small leafy tail and a single crown of two broad fern antlers.

Evolution

Line E-10: Antler Branches

Fernfawn is the base form.

  • Fernfawn → Megantler — the plains branch. In open country the antlers become an enormous visual signal and an organ for sensing the wind.
  • Fernfawn → Aurohorn — the polar branch. Long migrations strengthen magnetoreception, ultraviolet vision and the seasonal signals of the antlers.
